Enjoy a Super (Healthy) Bowl

It’s that time of the year again! Make sure to grab your team gear, foam fingers, and stretchy pants. We all know that the Super Bowl is more than just a game. It is a day we get together with friends and family to celebrate and mourn the end of the NFL season. Unfortunately, it is also a day that almost requires us to ditch our healthy eating habits and skip our workouts. But not this year! Even if we do “accidentally” miss our workouts on Sunday, with the help of Twitter and Pinterest we have more healthy party food options than could ever be consumed!

Twitter is one of the best ways to receive quick links to fun and easy recipes for the big game. @Shape_Magazine even gave followers a way to get in short 1-2 min workouts that can be done through the day. @WomensHealthMag using #SuperBowl made sure followers were informed about the 10 worst Super Bowl party snacks. Thanks to them we can all make sure to choose wisely on Sunday. I suggest following both accounts as they are sure to keep the recipes and workout ideas coming! However, if you want to avoid advertisements and you like advice from “real people,” go follow @FitBottomedGirl. With over 30,000 followers, they recently posted a new recipe for Low-Fat Stuffed Baked Potatoes.  #SuperBowl has more than just team and game day coverage. Make sure to check it out because many recipes and party ideas have been tagged with it.

Personally though, my favorite source for fun and healthy game day recipes is Pinterest. Thanks to Pinterest, millions are connected and it is easy to find and share pictures and recipes. Take this Pin I just for for example: The Greatist Table: 10 Healthy Super Bowl Recipes.  Because The Greatist Table created the recipes, then someone repinned them, and someone else repinned that, we have 10 great ideas! If you don’t like any of those recipes, just to go Pinterest and GO! The very nature of this social media outlet gives users the ability to browse for hours and hours on end. Trust me, I’ve done it.

I know it is easy to get caught up in the festivities of Super Bowl Sunday, so here are 5 easy ways to stay healthy from Fitsugar.com:

1) Bring your own healthy side to the party.

2) Get up, stand up (aka MOVE – don’t be a stuffed couch potato).

3) Alternate one alcoholic drink with one glass of water.

4) Take a reality check – just because it is there, does not mean you have to eat it.

5) Be active for the rest of the day. Workout before the game. Help set up and clean up for the party. After the game maybe go for a walk or play a game on the Wii.
