Tweaking Twitter for 2016

Dorsey

Nearly four months ago, Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey was named permanent CEO and given the difficult responsibility of “saving Twitter” as investors grew more concerned about the company’s recent slump. In response, Dorsey has introduced three new changes and developments to begin tweaking Twitter.

Embracing the Moments

In early October, Twitter unveiled one of its biggest innovations in efforts of tweaking Twitter: a collection of chosen and highlighted tweets regarding specific events and stories titled “Moments.” Despite initial hesitancy regarding the new feature, many have welcomed it as a simple and easy way to see how major news is unfolding on Twitter. Topics highlighted range from sports, TV shows, politics, news and other important events. When a user chooses to click on a moment, they will be taken to a screen that combines tweets, videos, memes, and more into a straightforward view. These moments allow users to follow updates and discussions about an event from a wide diversity of people without needing to follow specific accounts.

Stars or Hearts?

One of the changed features that has resulted in success for the company is the switch from the star-shaped “favorite” button to the heart-shaped “like” button. Many users were upset that a feature that had been present from the start of the site was being altered, however, the swap increased user engagement, accomplishing the initial goal. Twitter released a statement regarding the shift explaining, “We want to make Twitter easier and more rewarding to use, and we know that at times the star could be confusing, especially to newcomers. You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite. The heart, in contrast, is a universal symbol that resonates across languages, cultures, and time zones.”

Rumor to Reality

The third change started as a rumor, but Dorsey has recently acknowledged that it is a real possibility that could occur while the company is tweaking Twitter. Twitter is supposedly in talks regarding removing the 140-character limit and changing it to 10,000 characters. This sparked outrage as many users believed an iconic feature they knew and loved was being unnecessarily changed. However, the company believes that giving users the ability to better express their thoughts without summarizing with jumpstart user growth.
