He Tweets, He Scores!

What a weekend for the NBA! From the Celebrity All-Star game to the dunk contest to the actual NBA All-Star game, it was a great weekend full of events that had social media booming every hour. One of the top rated social media sites used for the festivities hosted in Houston, TX was Twitter.

Cast your vote through Twitter? That’s how the MVP was selected at the NBA All-Star game. Using hashtag #KiaAllStarMVP followed by the last name of the player that you wanted to receive MVP was how votes were calculated this year. Yep, that means online voting and text voting were very rare during these events.

However, in order to stay updated with the current plays for each event, a Twitter account, @NBAAllStar, was created to provide information to all NBA fans. The halftime report and commentators during the game would comment about the conversations being discussed via Twitter. Who would have ever thought that we needed social media to provide conversation topics for sporting events?

The dunk contest and Alicia Keys halftime performance were the two main events that made social media rise within minutes. No matter what the situation, Twitter was the number one outlet for fans to express their thoughts about each event.

Some examples provided below show how heavily social media was used. Screen shot 2013-02-18 at 7.35.10 PM
