Valentine Technology Etiquette

Sometimes love and technology don’t mix

More than ever, technology and other digital innovations have been growing rapidly in this world.  While its great to keep up with all the cool apps and latest technology, sometimes you can forget that face-to-face communication is still essential. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than sitting across your significant other during a romantic dinner and avoiding any technology faux pas. Here are a few tips for keeping this special day drama free.

In this age, people are literally attached to their phones at all times and constantly checking them for texts and updates. Surely you can keep your phone out of sight for a few hours and be courteous to your date. Resist the temptation of checking your work email and keep it on silent. Your date will appreciate the gesture and this keeps you attentive to the conversation.

Nothing is more awkward than looking up the restaurant address last minute when your date gets in the car. Make sure you find the best route beforehand on your phone rather than driving around with your phone in your hand. This bad habit also runs the risk of getting lost and seeming disorganized to your date.
Facebook and Twitter are fun social media websites but updating your status or tweeting as your date goes on is a bit strange. While you may be having fun and enjoying the company of a lovely person, the whole world doesn’t need to know a play by play of your night. Not only that but it makes it awkward when your date visits their social media and sees what you posted. There probably won’t be a second date.

Keep in mind that texting lingo stays in text. Don’t say “LOL, FAIL, WTF,” or “TTYL” in face-to-face conversation.  If your date wanted to hear that they would’ve spent the night texting you rather than a romantic dinner.

Valentine’s day is about sending flowers and chocolates not an e-card. If you feel the need to send a card make sure it’s handwritten so you can add that personal touch of love. Your date gets emails all the time and sure its convenient but you can definitely take the trouble to do more than send her an email.

Hope these tips can help you find love this Valentine’s Day and make the best of the latest technology! Just not on date night.
