What Exactly are Memes?

Memes have take the internet by storm through many popular blogs.

Meme pronounced as “meem” takes on an idea or behavior that spreads from person to person in a culture and usually takes the form of an image, website, hashtag, or video. Internet memes have become popular since the beginning of the internet and entertain people around the world. Probably one of the best memes was the “rick roll” which featured Rick Astley singing “Never gonna give you up.” The music video is used as a bait and switch to lure Youtube viewers as they watch a video they think is related to the subject they are looking for. They are then re-directed to the popular music video and confused about the “rick rolling.”

After this video, many other memes took off on popular blogs such as Reddit, 9gag, Tumblr, and Know Your Meme. Some memes take the form of an image showing emotions of a person through badly illustrated drawings. Emotions from anger, happiness, crying, and accepting challenges can be used by internet users.

Other popular memes take on the form of famous pop culture figures such as Willy Wonka, the Dos Equis man, Pulp Fiction, South Park, and more. Even famous people such as Obama and Freddie Mercury make the cut. They describe every day life and situations that help people from all over the internet relate. The most popular memes are reblogged thousands of times in a day.

Some of the more popular meme images are scumbag Steve which describes the typical scumbag guy you meet on the street or even a friend. Bad Luck Brian points out all the bad occurrences that happen to any unlucky person at the least expected moment. Success Kid shows a small toddler holding his fist up in a powerful pose with captions such as “Didn’t study… Aced test,” and “took out groceries from car… in one trip.”

Memes are circulated throughout the web and continue to entertain blog users. Fans of the Memes even create their own images through various websites and share with friends. So get familiar with Memes because they are here to stay.
