Is College Really Over?

As a transfer student at Southern Methodist University, college life has been a little different for me compared to students that go to one college for all four years. When I came to SMU from Blinn College at Texas A&M, I took a big leap of faith that this school would give me the opportunities that I needed to become successful.

Well that’s what happened. SMU being my dream school, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity when I found out I was accepted. Not knowing anyone in the city of Dallas, I decided this would be a great time to experience change in my life. New school, new people, new environment.

My first advising appointment was stressful however I knew that I wanted to do something related to communications. CCPA, now called Communication Studies, was the major that won me over when deciding what I wanted to do. I experienced some of the hardest classes I’ve ever taken in college and became very intimidated. I began to second-guess my major and wanted to change to Marketing in the Business school. However, I went along with the challenge of the courses and looking back I’m glad I pushed myself to the limit.

Experiencing SMU as a school and as an education is something that changed my life tremendously. The teachers and the courses that I took have prepared me for my future careers. Communication Studies has wonderful courses for their students and really know how to develop a relationship with their students making it easy to engage in class.

Future plans is something that every graduating student fears. For me, I am trying not to stress over what my future holds because I am blessed to have an internship that will last until August. However I have started to search and hunt for certain companies that I believe would be a good fit. The sooner a job comes my way, the better.

With college coming to an end, I have realized that all college students should never take this experience for granted. It is a privilege to be able to attend a great school like SMU. With graduation just around the corner, I am cherishing every moment of class because before you know it, I’ll be walking across that stage with a diploma in hand.
