Informational Interviews

Informational interviews may even be more important than traditional job interviews these days. A recent article on Mashable highlights the benefits of having informational interviews before seeking that job.

Informational Interviews have not always been an option for career-seekers. Today, HR and recruiting professionals in companies are more likely to offer this option to potential employees. These may take place over the phone, via skype or in person.

When I first became interested in applying for an internship at the agency where I currently work,  I was fortunate enough to have an informational interview opportunity. I was able to sit with current employees of the agency, have a tour and learn more about the position I would be applying for. This informational interview helped me in my formal interview process, as I had a much greater understanding of the work and office culture.

As currently many of my peers are looking for jobs, I definitely suggest seeking out informational interviews before applying for a job. Informational interviewing not only gives potential candidates great insight into a company, but also offers other value. It is a foot in the door, a networking opportunity and a great way to learn what you truly want to do in a job.
