5 Reasons Why Your Grandparents Should Be on Social Media

Read that title again. Okay, maybe one more time.

I know what you’re thinking… did I really just read that my GRANDPARENTS should be on social media? I bet you’re thinking there is no way they can see your college party pictures that you were once tagged in. There is NO WAY you can risk the embarrassment of your grandmother commenting on every single picture, asking who that boy or girl is, and IF you are bringing them home for Christmas. Or, better yet, commenting on how cute your cheeks look in the photo you uploaded.

OKAY… I get it. I understand the worries. But try and hear me out.

Here are my 5 reasons why your grandparents should be on social media:

  1. They feel DISCONNECTED from society.

Whether your grandparents live in a nursing home or live independently, they are more lonely. They miss the chaos that life once brought them. You are grown up with a job of your own. Life is in full swing for you, but has slowed down for them. As millennials, we live our lives through social media. Let’s have our grandparents feel CONNECTED to us through our social media platforms. Let them get a glimpse into the digital world we live in.

  2. Research proves that social inclusion amongst the elderly is imperative for their well-being, and the benefits are countless.

Let’s connect our grandparents with training in technological advancements to deepen their social connections with the outside world. Growing up in this technological era, we have unparalleled knowledge and experience. Let’s teach them the in’s and out’s of each social media platform. And for those who are far less savvy,  start simple. Teach them how to work their iPhones and ipads. Take it one step at a time and include your grandparents in this digital world.

  3. They need to learn what social media networking is.

The term “social media networking” was not even a term back in their day. Times sure have changed, and they cannot be left behind in this fast-paced technological world. Social media is not just for the innovative young crew of kids. Our elders should stay up-to-date to feel young again.

  4. Grandparent’s like to brag, LET THEM!

There is nothing more that grandparents like to do than brag about their amazing, beautiful grandchildren. By being connected to them on social media, they will have full access to show their friends your pictures.

  5. The conversation will only get better.

You can discuss recent events that are trending on Twitter, use the latest lingo, and stay connected when life gets in the way.

Turn your grandparents into happier, healthier, self-competent, “accepted” members with the social norms of today’s technological society.
