Deep Ellum Brewing Company Under Fire

Deep Ellum Brewing Company put under fire earlier this week, when people attacked them for their new company truck. The truck, used as a marketing tool for their Dallas Blonde beer, said “Goes Down Easy” on the side. When the company posted a picture of their new truck on their Facebook page, followers became enraged.

Some consumers believed the slogan was offensive and degrading to women, while other consumers thought it was a catchy and humorous slogan. Some say that the company used ‘rape culture’ or sexism to sell their product.

Along with the name of the beer, there is also a blonde doll used as the mascot for the beer. This with the slogan has put Deep Ellum Brewing Company under fire, especially on social media. On their Facebook page, they have changed the picture of the truck to a different one (shown below), stating that it is an inappropriate slogan and has censored it. However, the individual post/picture makes no mention of if they are getting rid of the slogan on the truck or on the beer, but does imply that they are in the works of fixing the product and are listening to what people have to say.

This picture, from DEBC’s Facebook page, shows the company’s response to the peoples uproar regarding the Dallas Blonde Beer’s inappropriate slogan.

In a separate blog post, Deep Ellum Brewing Company Founder John Reardon stated that they would remove the slogan from the beer.  In an article published in Pegasus News, it show the response of the company on the issue. They will remove the slogan, but show that their stance is that it is a joke and should only be taken that way.

“Deep Ellum’s lazy use of this well-worn sexist comparison of women to alcohol is disappointing and insulting to their female customers, but it goes deeper than that,” author Genevieve Cato said.

DEBC fired back both on social media and in Reardon’s blog post, stating the slogan is merely a double entendre for a literal description of the beer and a “glorified blowjob joke.”

“If you somehow link all oral sex to violence against women, the problem might lay with you,” Reardon wrote. Dallas Blonde’s slogan will not be removed from the cans, he added, but will be removed from the van.
