President George W. Bush visited Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital today to meet nurse Amber Vinson and celebrate that Dallas is officially Ebola-free. The return of Nurse Vinson celebrates the end of Dallas’ Ebola outbreak since the first patient entered Presbyterian Hospital last month.
Nurse Vinson contracted Ebola after caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first U.S. Ebola patient.
Dallas News reports that President Bush “gave her [Nurse Vinson] a kiss on the forehead and then a big hug” upon his introduction. He took the time to shake hands, take pictures, and offer encouraging words to the staff after the traumatizing weeks following the death of Duncan.
Today, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has officially announced that Dallas is looking forward to being “‘Ebola-free’ after the last of the 171 people being monitored for the virus reach the 21-day mark today.” Rawlings released a statement saying that the last month has been a challenge but he is “proud of the citizens of Dallas for learning the facts about Ebola and staying calm.” He continued to state that, “I’m especially thankful to all of the brave healthcare workers who put their lives on the line to help others, including Vinson and Nnina Pham, whoare true heroes in this city and around the world.”
Presbyterian Hospital is a well-respected hospital in the Dallas area and though it took a toll during the Ebola crisis, the hospital is looking forward to continuing high quality health care.
Upon leaving the hospital, President Bush took the time to sign a poster for the hospital stating, “God bless Presbyterian Hospital.”
