The Amazing Copenhagen

Last semester, I studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. To say I had the best time of my life is an understatement. I was able to live the life of a local in an apartment on the canal, take classes taught by Danish professionals, explore the amazing city itself and adventure through Europe on a whim. I fell in love with the amazing Copenhagen but of course I am biased so let me share with you a few of my reasons that may persuade you to agree.

Bike culture: For four months I did not set foot in a car. I rented a bike through a local bike shop and that bike became my best friend. In rain, shine, night, or morning I was riding around the city to class, the gym, grocery store, and even to the bars. Copenhagen makes it easy to bike, it’s even weird if you don’t. There are hundreds of bike miles across the city and neighboring towns in order to save money, gas, and time.

Noma: Chef Rene Redzepi’s gastronomic mecca creates world-class dishes presented in a 20-course meal. The best restaurant in the world encompasses Nordic cooking and has become one of the most progressive places to dine. Cooks from across the world have dedicated their lives to the restaurant, a surprisingly casual atmosphere that individually matches a different wine for each plate.

Christiania: Our parents may hate it but the Danes love it. This real life hippie commune is like a different world compared to the rest of Copenhagen, and the rest of Europe, and serves as an escape within the hustle and bustle of the city to think, experiment, and be yourself without facing judgement. Christiania is not considered part of Denmark, or the European Union for that matter, and is individually run under the Christiania Law of 1989.

I love Copenhagen and plan to return one day whether it be for a short vacation or long-term adventure. Sometimes I cry myself to sleep because I miss it so much, not kidding. For such a busy and developing city, I never felt stressed or alone once during my semester. I fit right in. The people are friendly and welcoming, the cafes are warm, pastries delicious, skies colorful, food fresh, and the bars are fun and lively. Copenhagen is amazing.
