More voters are receiving their news from social media and the 2016 presidential candidates are taking advantage of this medium. Social media is a tool for campaigns to reach out to Millennials and gain momentum in the polls and recognition in the news. Twitter has become imperative for candidates to use to gain the public eye and attention of potential voters.

Twitter is King on the Second Screen

Twitter's logo is located on many second screens.Ellen’s Oscar-selfie, otherwise known as the selfie that broke Twitter, became the most retweeted tweet of all time with over 2 million tweets just hours after posting. TV viewers live-tweeting TV programs has become a phenomenon in recent years with shows creating unique hashtags and twitter accounts. Ellen’s Oscar-selfie is just one example of how the social network is dominating the second screen world.

Home Depot’s twitter account makes a fumble

Home Depot’s twitter account hit a new low yesterday when the company tweeted in regards to its ESPN College Gameday show sponsorship saying, “Which drummer is not like the others? See more @CollegeGameDay pics at #HDgameday #football.”

While this tweet didn’t read offensively, the photo that accompanied it of three drummers, two being African-American and the third wearing a gorilla suit, did. The tweet was quickly removed from Home Depot’s twitter account, but was unfortunately removed too late to avoid the negative social media buzz.

Twitter For Dummies

I thought I would provide a little insight on how to use Twitter. Twitter is becoming extremely popular and is growing rapidly but there are still plenty of people who don’t know how to use it. Even though I consider myself fairly technologically savy, when I first got a Twitter I had no idea how to use it. There’s a hashtag (#) and (@) sign, what could they possibly mean? I did not understand why someone would say a phrase with a hashtag preceding it. There was no direction manual for me to look at. After a while of using Twitter I was able to finally figure it out.
