Olympics Athletes Looking to Score More Than Just Gold Medals

In the technological 21st century it would only seem normal to cut away any old-fashioned rules of dating and Tinder is no exception.

This dating application uses your Facebook information and mini profile to find eligible singles within a certain mile radius. Potential matches appear on the application based on certain qualities and interests. If you like what you see then you swipe right and if you aren’t interested you swipe left. If the person you swipe to the right has also swiped you to the right, then bingo we have a match!

If you’re laughing at this idea because it sounds absurd, think again. The application is downloaded more than 20,000 times a day, has over 600 million swipes per day, and has made over 20 million matches to date. Debuting just 16 short months ago at The University of Southern California, the application is growing quick-just look at the Olympic Village.

There has been a lot of buzz about Tinder’s presence in the Olympic Village after 23-year-old American snowboarder, Jamie Anderson, revealed how many of the athletes were on the application. At one point Anderson even admitted, “There was one point where I had to be like OK, this is way too distracting. I deleted my account to focus on the Olympics.” Anderson wasn’t and isn’t the only Olympic athlete taking full advantage of the application. All three Americans skiers, who just swept the podium in the skiing slope style, all admitted to being on the application too.

Receiving this attention by Olympic athletes has been huge for Tinder. Talk about free publicity! The founder of Tinder reported to the Wall Street Journal that there has been a 400% day-over-day increase since the Olympics opened and Tinder shows no signs of slowing down. The CEO, Sean Rad, even hinted that Tinder might be moving beyond the dating application and stepping into the realm of the business world.

For now, the single people of the world, especially those athletes in Sochi, can still enjoy the perks of this online dating application. Whatever you’re doing Tinder, you’re doing it right.
