The Skimm: a news source for everyone

Don’t you hate how difficult it is to get your news in the morning? With so many news stations and outlets, it’s a battle even deciding which source to trust, and once you do, the stories are often so dry that they’re difficult to trudge through.

The Skimm: a news source for everyone

Enter the Skimm, a news source for everyone. Whether you’re young or old, male or female, rich or poor, it’s easy to appreciate the simple newsletter format.

What is it?

Unfamiliar with the Skimm? Here’s the lowdown: it’s a daily newsletter sent straight to your email inbox. The founders use attention-grabbing headlines to segue into a short, simple-but-complete news briefing and a brief background of the situation. The writers include pertinent links within the stories and provide the opportunity to share the stories on Twitter and Facebook. They also archive all their email blasts and provide access to them on their website, making it easy to look back for old news.

Why is it important?

Staying up to date can be hard. Reading the news is time consuming, especially for those who find traditional news too dry or difficult to read. The Skimm, run by two newsroom veterans with a passion for sharing the news. Frustrated with their jobs as producers at NBC (and the fact that their friends weren’t even watching the news they produced), they decided it was time for something new. Thank goodness they did, because how else could you get the same news from Alcatraz to Marfa? The Skimm makes reading the news not only easy, but almost fun.

The Skimm really is a news source for everyone: it brings the news to 20-somethings and 60-somethings alike, according to at least one testimonial. It’s been written up by Forbes, Fast Company, CNN, Bloomberg, Vanity Fair, and mentioned by the Today Show. It’s a revolution. It’s a news source for everyone, even those not-morning-people.
