A Controversial Host

It has been one week since the 2013 Academy Awards were held. There were lots of interesting occurances at the 2013 Oscars show. From Jennifer Lawrence’s fall to the incredible performance by the cast of Les Miserables, there was much to see. One thing though that was particularly controversial, was the commentary and humor of host Seth MacFarlane.

Seth MacFarlane is the writer for the hits Family Guy, American Dad and the recent comedy film Ted. Although McFarlane’s jokes may provide many laughs for these audiences, his humor on the 2013 Oscars was not altogether amusing. MacFarlane made a joke about Chris Brown and Rihanna, when he said “this is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who’s been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie” as he was introducing Django Unchained. He also made comments such as “she shows every woman’s innate ability to never, ever let anything go” in reference to the actress in Zero Dark Thirty.

Having discussed this controversy in a women’s studies class recently, it can be concluded that these jokes  were really not at all appropriate for the Academy Awards. For example, MacFarlane joking about Rihanna and Chris Brown’s domestic violence dispute makes it seem almost as if it is Rihanna’s fault or that it is not an extremely serious matter. I would definitely give MacFarlane a less than mediocre rating.
