Pregnant? iPhones Got An App For That

Want to find the best restaurant in Texas? Apple has an app for that. Want to find personalized workouts? Apple has an app for that. Want to check the heartbeat of your unborn child? Apple now has an app for that too!

The Bellabeat Tracking System is changing pregnancies one hand-held fetal doppler at a time. This system allows pregnant mothers everywhere to track their baby’s heartbeat from inside the womb, whenever and wherever they are. This, however, not an actual ultrasound scanner, as no picture pops up, but rather the company advertises it as a DIY check-in option between doctor visits.

The Bellabeat works by using the hand-held fetal doppler, which connects to the iPhone through the audio jack and acts as a microphone, to amplify the child’s heartbeat. The information collected from this is then transmitted to the BabyWatch application.  The app uses the transmitted sound and morphs it into colorful and moving representations of the baby’s vital signs, allowing you to check in our your baby at any time.

The application also serves numerous other functions. Updating you on your child’s development, offering tips during your pregnancy, and connecting you to other expecting moms through the application are just a few of the other perks of the BabyWatch.

Mothers should be cautious when using the Bellabeat Tracking System though. Although it has been FDA and CE approved, mothers should be very careful not rely too heavily on the application because at the end of the day you are not a doctor. It is a great application to use to stay up-to-date in between doctors visits, but mothers should seek medical help immediately if they fear something has gone wrong instead of relying on the Bellabeat to self-check. Doctors also warn mothers using this device that they may be unable to distinguish their vital signs for their baby’s, which can also further lead to some misguidance.

Ultimately, the Bellabeat Tracking System and BabyWatch application are changing the lives of pregnant mothers everywhere.  It will be very telling to see what problems or success this application will face as mothers begin to use it more and more.
