Mr. & Ms. SMU Bodybuilding Competition

April 16, Southern Methodist University hosted its annual Mr. & Ms. SMU Bodybuilding Competition. The Hughes-Trigg auditorium was packed with the friends and families of the competitors. Fans used flowers, posters and extremely loud chanting to show their support.

Upon walking into the auditorium, I was met with Core Power representatives. Handing out free samples of their protein shake, the two female representatives were more than willing to chat about the product. With a variety of flavors such as chocolate, honey and strawberry banana, Core Power has regular drinks with 26g of protein and a light option with 20g of protein. I went for the regular chocolate to play it safe. I’ve had my fair share of protein shakes and it’s pretty hard to mess up a basic chocolate.  However, while Core Power was good, I definitely prefer Muscle Milk Light Chocolate or Lean Active 7 Chocolate Cake when it comes down to taste.

The three female competitors displayed their hard work first.  The competing females were Taylor Robinson, Michelle Kim and Alexandra Totah.  Each competitor had the chance to take the stage and show of their posing skills to chosen music.  My favorite music choice was “Shake Ya Tail Feather” from the Bad Boys soundtrack. Finally, all the women took the stage and competed in a “Pose Down.”  In the end, Taylor Robinson was named the 2013 Ms. SMU Champion. Michelle Kim took second place and also was awarded Best Poser. Alexandra Totah was awarded third place.

The male competitors took the stage next.  The men were told more specified poses to perform for the judges. They too posed to their choice of music and summed up the competition with a very long Pose Down. Judges took their time to make a decision as they slowly and methodically asked contestants to switch places and step forward or backwards for better comparisons. Ali Asker was eventually named 2013 Mr. SMU Champion and Best Poser for the men’s division. Andrew Johnson took home second place and Paul Anderson was given third place. The other male competitors were Juan Castillo, Michael Gunnels, Adam Deeb and Patrick Lan.

The Mr. & Ms. SMU Body Building Competition was amazing and truly fun to be a part of! The crowd was great and so supportive. I recommend going every year! It’s not only great inspiration but also an amazing way to support a friend.
