My SMU Experience

Attending Southern Methodist University

My four years here at Southern Methodist University have been some of the best years of my life. It definitely did have its ups and downs but ultimately, I think I have thoroughly enjoyed my SMU experience.

My SMU Experience

Being from California, I was nervous at the beginning because I am the oldest child and I was afraid that being so far from home would be difficult. During my first year at SMU, I rushed Tri-Delta and met some of my best friends. I truly believe that my SMU experience would not have been the same without having met them.

My sophomore year, I decided to take a communications course out of a recommendation from a friend. I took Communications Rhetoric and Theory courses and quickly learned that I was very interested in the topic. After taking an Italian course that was required for my communications major, I also discovered that I found the language interesting. I then chose to major in Communications Studies and minor in Italian. Even though school was starting to come together for me, I had some issues with friends and my outside life. Luckily, I found the friends I have today and they helped me enjoy the rest of my sophomore year.

My junior year was probably one of my favorites because I was able to go abroad with my best friend from home. We are both communications majors and Italian minors so we decided to go to Italy. We chose the city of Florence because they had both communications as well as Italian courses and we had both previously visited and loved the city. Studying abroad in Florence was one of the best experiences of my life and I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering it. I was able to learn about and experience a different culture and grow from it. I will never forget the memories and friends I made from that experience. As the saying goes, I truly left my heart in Florence.

Entering my senior year was emotional as I am sure it is for everyone. Senior year forces you to realize that your life is about to change forever as you enter the workforce. But first you need to find a job. My senior year experience was filled with friends and people talking about their futures and asking me about mine. As for my future, I am moving back to Orange County, California to find a job in public relations in Los Angeles.
