My 4 year Journey at SMU

My 4 year journey at SMU has  been a roller coaster with its ups and downs, good and bad moments. But overall it has been a great experience in which I had the opportunity to learn more about myself, meet wonderful people and travel to amazing places.

Reminiscing my years at SMU

I remember my freshmen year as it was yesterday, I remember Mustang Corral everyone was so excited to make friends, I remember when first I met my roomate (whom I am still really good friends with.) I am originally from Panama, when I started at SMU  I have been living in Dallas already for 7 months but still I was getting used to the fact that I was living away from my family and  high school friends.  So,  my freshmen years I  mostly  focused on my academics, and just had to push through being homesick. I also volunteered at a local church and  at the Children’s hospital to keep myself distracted. At this point  I wanted  double major in Studio Art and Communications and a minor in Italian. So, my freshmen year I mostly took art classes. During my first summer I went to DC to visit my best friend and I ended up taking a class there.

During my Sophmore year, I started making more friends by going to events, joining organizations and participating in more SMU activities. I declared  Communications as my major and  wanted to minor as well in Art Management. At this point I was still very homesick, my classes were not doing so well. This year I  thought about going home so many things, but now that I think back I am so glad I didn’t. During my Junior year things started to get back in place.

I started my Junior year at American University were I did the Washington Journalism Semester Program. I was attending class/seminars 3 days a week and I was doing an Internship  at Bread for the World 2 days a week. This was a great learning experience since I was studying Journalism/Communications in the Capital of the U.S during elections. During my second semester I met some amazing people at SMU, people whom I share things in common with. At this point I had resigned to my art major and I declared it as a  minor.

Hello Senior year!  I started my senior year in an amazing way… Studying abroad in Europe! I went to study for a Semester in Franklin College Switzerland were I was taking Italian, communications and general classes. This has been one of the best experiences of my life. I got to visit over 10 countries, every weekend me and my friends traveled to a different countries and cities  in Switzerland. Also, I had the chance to go to Turkey for 2 weeks as part of a class to study the history and the ancient civilizations, this was my favorite part of my abroad experience. I could go on and on about this trip, so I am just going to keep it short. Now, I am just getting ready to graduate and to face whatever life throws at me. Upon graduation I will move to Washington DC.

In this 4 years I learned that School is not only about academics or about having a social life its more than than its about building a relationship with yourself and learning about yourself.
