Joy in a Jar

It is important that as members of our technologically advanced society we do not neglect our duty to give back to the community. Kid President, a 9-year-old YouTube sensation, encourages people to spend a little time each day to help make the world more awesome.

When was the last time you did something to share and promote joy among others? It is common for members of our society to focus immensely on what we can do for ourselves, but every now and then it is important to do something for others.

In one of his videos, Kid President shares the story of a 10-year-old girl named Jessie Rees who lost the battle to cancer, and left her mark on this planet. She started a movement called NEGU, which stands for “Never Give Up.” And she wanted to encourage children in the hospitals to keep persevering through their process. She started creating Joy Jars filled with toys, crayons, and other great things for children to give out to other kids in the hospital. She would make them for people she didn’t know and the small act of kindness would have a great impact.

The following video shows the incredible impact these jars have because children who spend a lot of time in the hospital often feel drained and isolated. The Joy Jar lets children know someone cares about them and wants to encourage them to keep fighting.

This is a great way to give back, and Joy Jars can be purchased via donation and the Joy Squad will deliver the jars to hospitals all over. People can also opt to become a member and donate a minimum $20 a month and provide 12 jars for children during the year.

It is encouraging to see young people making a difference in the lives of others. What are some other great examples you have seen of community outreach?
