The War Against Snapchat Continues with Facebook’s “Messenger Day”

Facebook’s testing out a new feature in Poland called “Messenger Day” that’s almost identical to Snapchat’s Stories.

It was only a matter of time before Facebook tried to get in on the Snapchat Story battle that’s all the rage right now. On Friday, they released a new feature in Poland called Messenger Day, where users can share filtered photos and videos that expire after 24 hours. Like Snapchat, Messenger Day appears at the top of the Messenger app with your “My Day” story, and is then followed by a list of what your friends have posted.

So Facebook, where’s the originality?

With Messenger Day, users can chose from over 100 photo stickers.

In its defense, the stakes were raised after Instagram released their own version of Snapchat’s Stories this past August. But while good-hearted inspiration is always welcome, a line in the sand must be drawn. It appears as though the uniqueness of ideas has faltered among the major social media hubs of the era. There can only be so many versions of the Snapchat Story, so what exactly is Facebook trying to accomplish?

Launching the new feature internationally definitely has it’s perks. For one, Snapchat is not nearly as popular overseas as it is here in the United States, so Poland is the perfect environment for Facebook to test out its Snapchat clone without receiving any backlash. Messenger is also widely popularized around the globe, with over one billion users worldwide. Therefore, the release of the feature in Poland would make it much easier for the new app to catch wind.

Speculations now arise if Messenger Day will merely be dismissed as Snapchat’s lowly copycat once it reaches the U.S. After Snapchat turned down Mark Zuckerberg’s $3 billion dollar offer to buy the company, it seems as though Facebook’s taken a personal vendetta against the image messaging empire. In the wake of the ‘Snapchat vs. Everyone’ war, who do you think will reign supreme?
