Twitter Plans to Eliminate Trolls with Future Update

Twitter plans to eliminate trolls in the future update in hopes to improve its safety policy, product, and enforcement strategy.

Twitter Plans to Eliminate TrollsIn hopes to prevent cultural problems that arise on social media, Twitter plans to eliminate trolls in the next update. According to Wikipedia, a Twitter troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community. This is done with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. Engadget  reported that Twitter’s new, future strategy gives people “more control over their Twitter experience” ” and offers the “most important safety features” to users.

Twitter gives users access to the freedom of expression. This particular quality is one of the major reasons why so many individuals enjoy using this social media source today. It has become one of the go-to outlets for news and conversation. With this being said, when users have the freedom to express themselves in a cyber fashion, things do not always end well.

The internet allows people to put a mask on their identity. This causes individuals to say very offensive things online. Why? Because when people are hiding behind a computer screen they feel as if they can get away with it. In today’s society, it is unfortunately very common to find harmful Twitter accounts. These accounts consist of racism, threats, violence and harassment towards women and minorities. In other words, Twitter is infested with Twitter trolls.

Dick Costolo, the former CEO of Twitter, said the website, “suck(s) at dealing with trolls” and “sucked at it for years.” Twitter created a safety council in response to these reoccurring issues and negative feedback.

Was the safety council successful?

No, the safety council strategy unfortunately did not succeed in eliminating Twitter trolls off of the site.  According to Engadget, Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones, “received a barrage of abuse in the run up to the launch of Ghostbusters that temporarily forced her off the site. The site subsequently banned the leader of that mob, but that hasn’t done much to make everyone behave more politely.”

Cyber-bullying is a very serious and problematic issue in the world today. It will not be easy to get rid of Twitter trolls for good, but it is worth it to try for the sake of society’s well-being.

How Can We Get Rid of Twitter Trolls for Good?

Twitter currently does not have a solution to completely wipe out Twitter trolls from the web. However, Twitter plans to eliminate trolls as soon as possible. There is not a set date for these upcoming plans.

There is no doubt that Twitter is a very popular social media source. However, the harmful and destructive reputation that is acquires is real. According to Engadget, Twitter’s reputation for trolls is so toxic that it has turned away potential buyers such as Disney. It is crucial to maintain a positive reputation in order to be successful in the world today. With this being said, Twitter needs to step it up and take action immediately to eliminate trolls for good.
