A Glance Back At The Best 4 Years Of My Life

I don’t even know where to start when writing this blog. There are so many memories, pictures, conversations, and inside jokes from the last 4 years running through my mind. I guess I will begin my blog by reminiscing about the search for a roommate, and the place where it all started… Boaz Hall circa 2010.

Before school even started I remember the panic I felt when I realized I needed to find a roommate. I  frantically turned to “SMU’s Class of 2014”  Facebook page and began rapid firing messages to girls who ‘looked’ like they would potentially be good roommates (pretty profile pictures, cute clothes, looked fun?). It should have been titled “Online Dating: Roommate Edition,” because that was essentially what we were doing… Continue reading

Does Tor actually work

tor

Tor is a free software designed to enable anonymity online. It works just like an Internet Browser, but Tor instead directs Internet traffic through a free, worldwide, volunteer network that consist of more that ‘four thousand relays’. This then conceals a user’s location and his usage from anyone conducting any type of network surveillance online. In simple words, you can do whatever you want in the Internet and nothing would ever trace back to you. Many people have used this ‘invisible ability’ for good and sometimes even for evil purposes. So back to the real question, does this free software, which works like an anonymous Internet browser, actually work?

Cyber Bullying and Sports Shaming

Last weekend, the Auburn versus Alabama game was one for the ages. The already heated rivalry produced an exciting, close game that eventually ended with Auburn coming out on top. In the end, a botched field goal was returned over 105 yards for a touchdown and the win. While social media made it easy to follow the game play-by-play, it also showcased one of the darker aspects of technology: the opportunity for easy, senseless bullying. Continue reading

Tis the season to be “jolly”

“It isn’t what you know, but who you know.”WRAMc4F

Those words of wisdom have been stuck in my mind ever since I even considered coming to SMU, and especially now that I’m finishing up and looking to get into the vicious world of lawyers and businessmen, I’m looking forward to those nights of bourbon after days of golf with partners and CEOs. But I’m sure you’re not reading this for a joyful outlook on my future fitting of the season, you’re reading this for a bloody show. And believe me, you’re gonna get one.  Continue reading

Instagram: Death to Photography

Death to Photography

Everyone is a photographer nowadays. Thanks to Instagram and those fabulous filters, you can turn any basic photo into a work of photographic “art” and then share it with the whole world. But photographers think that Instagram is the death to photography.  But what’s the big deal? Apparently,  if you use enough filters and you listen very closely, you can hear Ansel Adams rolling in his grave.

Flashback Friday

In honor of the weather and this day off of school, I would like to dedicate this post to a reflection of the  amazing years I have spent at SMU.

Emily White Making Her Rounds In Social Media

emily-white snapchat

Many technology companies have been criticized for not having females on their executive boards. Apple and Twitter has been criticized for having only white males on their executive board. Last October, Apple CEO Tim Cook hired Burberry Angela Ahrendts to run both online and retail stores, as well being Apple’s first female to join its executive leadership team.  Today, Twitter announced after being criticized for its all-male lineup hired Dame Majorie Scardino to join its executive board. But the most popular and more recent companies Instagram and Snapchat are battling for one woman, Emily White.

My Years at SMU

Well, it’s been a crazy four years. I feel like it was just yesterday that my family was helping me move into McElvaney Hall. Each semester has brought new and interesting adventures. I feel like each semester I have made new friends, learned more, grown my education, and more. I can’t begin to describe how happy I am that I chose SMU and how beneficial my education at SMU has been.

Some of the greatest experiences have been those involving school activities. Being a part of the SMU Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, being part of the Delta Gamma sorority, being a Communication Studies and Public Relations major, and studying abroad are just some of the many activities that have changed my life.

To be honest, I don’t know where to start. It’s hard to summarize four years into one blog post. It’s had to properly describe all the things about my four years in college that have changed my life.

If I were to pinpoint one factor or influence, it would have to be the benefit of meeting people from all over the country and all over the world. Meeting people from different walks of life has changed the way I view each new experience that I am thrown into. I have met people from all different backgrounds at SMU, in the Dallas community, and while traveling/studying abroad.

I’ve overheard my friends say that they are ready to graduate, that they’re sick of studying for classes and taking tests. Yes, I am too, but when I think of what awaits…the “real world”….I start to think that I could definitely stay in college forever. Sometimes I’m ready to be out on my own in the working world, and sometimes I never want these four amazing years to end.

Here’s to a Super Super-Senior Year

To say I’m a senior is a bit of a stretch. I graduated high school in May of 2010 and started my college career in August of 2010. All my friends are seniors and my graduation year is still 2014. I’ve even exceeded the total number of credits necessary to graduate from SMU, but I have a full three semesters worth of classes left before I can get my diploma. I might have (accidentally) stretched out my time at SMU as long as I could, but I wouldn’t change a thing about my college experience.

Bitcoins, should we trust them and are they any different than the FED?

Bitcoins is known as a peer-to-peer digital currency that currently operates with no inter-mediation of a central authority. This digital currency thus has no nation or government protecting it nor giving it any any value or trust. The Bitcoin process is fully digital and no paper money has ever been issued under its name. So the question is, should Bitcoins be allowed to operate and can they be trusted?

The Next Generation Condom: Beef

I bet you didn’t know that people used to use cat gut as a contraceptive. Yea, that’s right. Cat gut. Intestines. A little weird when compared to modern latex or rubber, yet they all have their faults. And now that problem is solved. With beef tendon.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is offering $100,000 to each 11 ideas designed to reinvent the condom. The Gates Foundation offered the prize to scientists back in March to design a condom that people would actually want to use and would “significantly preserve or enhance pleasure.” The motivation behind this is quite noble, as the Gates Foundation is one biggest supporters of global health and aims to reduce the levels of sexually transmitted viruses such as HIV or unwanted pregnancies.
