IKEA has been at the forefront of Scandinavian design since its founding in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad As of 2014, IKEA owns 351 stores in 46 countries and is one of the world’s largest furniture retailers. Now, the Swedish company is taking its designs to the next step with wireless charging in their furniture.
At the beginning of March, IKEA announced a new lineup of desks, bedside tables, and lamps that will come equipped with Qi wireless charging technology. Charging cords may soon be a thing of the past as the charging spots are marked with large Xs and provide your wireless charging-capable gadgets with all the juice they need.
For those of who do not know what Qi is, like me, here is a little more information according to PR Newswire: Qi is the most widely deployed wireless power standard, available in 3,000 hotels, restaurants, airports and public locations worldwide. There are now more than 80 Qi-enabled smartphones, 15 models of Qi-enabled cars and countless Qi mobile accessories in the market today.
This sounds almost to good to be true, right? Possibly. Wireless charging is not the best thing for the life of your smartphone battery.
According to an article posted on Gizmodo last December, “Wireless charging can be incredibly convenient if your phone can do it, but it’s not without its disadvantages. The inductive, wireless chargers out there today have this nasty habit of generating a fair bit of waste heat. And while wasted energy is just a bummer in general, that heat will also toast your battery in the process. That’s no bueno. It’s a little less convenient, but standard plug-in charging is going to keep your battery in better shape, especially if you’re some place warm to begin with.”
