Wendy’s Social Media: Knowing the Difference Between Platforms

Knowing your audience is one of the most important parts of digital communication. If you don’t know who you are talking to, you can’t tailor your message to them. This is something that Wendy’s seems to have a very strong understanding of. Wendy’s uses their social media very differently on each channel that they are on. Let’s take a look at three of them to see what we can learn!

Professionalism on LinkedIn

LinkedIn has always been the place where it is most important to remain professional. Even when you have a little fun, it is important to not treat LinkedIn like you would any other social media platform. Wendy’s understands this!

On the Wendy’s LinkedIn, the page looks very similar to any other company’s. There are announcements of quarterly earnings reports, employee achievements, new product announcements. Although it has loosened up recently, LinkedIn is not the place to resist the mold. Wendy’s fits in well, and if we look at their other social media accounts, we can see why this is so surprising.

Social media’s wild side: Wendy’s Twitter and Instagram

Twitter and Instagram is where we see a very stark contrast from the straight and narrow, professional LinkedIn page that Wendy’s gives us. On Twitter and Instagram, we see Wendy’s Social Media wild side!

Wendy’s has gained a bit of a reputation on these platforms for making jokes and poking fun at other restaurants. With this tweet they posted a pretty brutal dig at McDonald’s expense. While to some this could seem mean, it shows that Wendy’s understands the limits of each platform.

As we discussed earlier, there are certain platforms where you are expected to act a certain way such as LinkedIn. However, there are other platforms where you are invited to have fun and get people’s attention as you do it! This is what Wendy’s does with their social media. They act professional on LinkedIn, but on Twitter and Instagram they push the limits and explore what they can do!

Understand who you are talking to and always meet the expectations of your audience when you can on social media. That being said, don’t be afraid to have fun! Try something new, and test the limits like Wendy’s!
