Everyone knows that LinkedIn is the Facebook of the professional world. If you have, had, or are currently looking for a job, chances are you also have (or should have) a LinkedIn profile. Created in 2002, LinkedIn is the go-to social media site to forge connections in the business world. It lets users promote themselves as well as search for other professionals online. With 467 million users, however, there are some tips that everyone can (and should) follow for creating a successful LinkedIn profile.
- Upload a professional profile picture
Like it or not, first impressions matter, and your LinkedIn profile picture is the first thing people will see when they visit your page. If you don’t look professional, it gives people an immediate reason to believe you aren’t professional either.
- Craft an eye-catching headline
Many LinkedIn users have a headline at the top of their profile that simply states their job title and current company. Although this is informative, it’s also a snooze fest. Create a short, unique tagline for yourself that demonstrates what you can do for others.
- Fill out your summary
In the summary section, list 5-6 of your greatest accomplishments, and keep in mind who you’re writing for; write from the perspective of the type of people you want to target. If you have relevant files, pictures, or other documents, you can also attach them here.
- Fill out everything else
Your LinkedIn profile shouldn’t be a recap of your resume, so don’t just share the bare bones of your previous personal and work experiences. Think about including any volunteer opportunities, as well as any relevant groups or organizations that you’re a part of. Add your skills too.
- Ask for recommendations and endorsements
Ask friends, colleagues, and previous bosses to endorse the skills you’ve listed, and also to write recommendations. If a potential employer looks at your LinkedIn profile and sees that multiple people have endorsed or recommended you, it automatically makes you seem more legitimate when other professionals testify on your behalf.
LinkedIn can be an invaluable tool for connecting with other professionals and organizations, but to effectively maximize this capability, you need to know how to create a successful LinkedIn profile- one that shares your accomplishments, demonstrates your capabilities, and highlights your passions and interests.
