VIVA MEXICO CITY!

When it comes to Mexico, D.F. there is much more than meets the eye

There's nothing like Mexico City

There’s nothing like Mexico City

When you think of visiting Mexico, Cabo San Lucas or Cancun are usually the first places that come to mind. These well-known beach locations are top tourist destinations and although they have a lot to offer, I am now convinced they cannot compare to the beauty of the city of Mexico.

When my roommates suggested going to Mexico City for our last college Spring Break I was a little hesitant.  I honestly did not think there was much to do there for 10 days. But after our vacation this month, all I have to say is I wish we had 10 extra days!

Mexico, D.F. is one of the largest and most populated cities in America (21 million people). It has the perfect tropical weather (high 70s all week during the day and a cool breeze at night); the most delicious cuisine (we tried everything from the most mouth-watering beans and requeson (traditional cheese) to the tastiest Argentinean filet); the richest culture (which all Mexicans take great pride in); and the sweetest people (true gentlemen and kind-hearted women). The city has so much to offer and so much to do that we did not stop to rest for 10 days and we still had a lot more to cover.

If I tried to make a list of all the things to do in Mexico City the list would be never-ending. So here are a few of my favorite, must-go-to locations in this amazing city:

Mexico City Lovin'

Mexico City Lovin’

Teotihuacan Pyramids: Teotihuacan literally translates to “place where men become gods”. And that’s pretty much how you feel when standing at the top of the 64-meter-high Piramide del Sol, the second tallest pyramid in America.

Basilica de Guadalupe: The sanctuary  of the patroness of all Mexicans, la Virgin of Guadalupe, was built in 1706 and is home of the image of the Virgin.

Castillo de Chapultepec: The architectural monument serves as the National Museum of History of Mexico and it showcases important historical pieces including paintings, pictures, jewelry, and documents.  It’s the only real castle in Latin America.

If you are going to Mexico, D.F. in the near future (which I highly recommend!!!) be sure to also visit las trajineras at Xochimilco where you can enjoy a boat ride with Mariachis and authetic Mexican food,  and have lunch in Polanco.  It’s also a must that you go to Coyoacan, a bohemian prehistorical barrio in Mexico where you will find Frida Kahlo’s little blue house and the Leon Trotsky Museum. Viva Mexico City!
