Instagram is quickly becoming the dominating social channel to many online users. First they gave Snapchat a run for their money with stories. Now, Pinterest needs to watch its back. Instagram just introduced Instagram shopping tags.

Instagram’s newest feature is shopping tags. Now a user can see how much an item costs on Instagram. Next, a user can directly buy it. It’s easy as ABC. Tap a button to see the basic details of each product. Next, tap a product for further detail. This information includes links to directly purchase the item.
They are not the first to do it
Pinterest introduced buyable pins some time ago. Buyable pins are largely used by many businesses already. The buyable pins have been a driving force in keep Pinterest in social the playing field. So naturally, Instagram comes out with a similar feature.
Instagram shopping tag : an exclusive club
Not every user and not every retailer will get to experience shopping tags. At first, it will only be available to a small group of iOS users in the United States. Instagram also partnered with major retailers to test out shopping tags. The list includes Kate Spade and Warby Parker (Here).
Plans to expand to other countries, devices and retailers will likely come after this trial period.
Why Instagram, why?
Instagram doesn’t just want to make a users life more convenient. They want to make money from advertisers. Advertisers will line up if they see they can turn a users ad view into dollars in just a few seconds. It will be interesting to see how and if Instagram’s profits increase this quarter.
How should we feel?
While Instagram desperately needs to come up with some original ideas, it is a good thing. Many users today use Instagram as a platform to find their favorite products. Installing shopping tags will surely be a success story for Instagram.
