Preteens, teens, adults, and even the elderly have many options to choose from when it comes to social networking.
Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest all consume the normal human these days.
All of these platforms serve to entertain, connect, provoke conversation and to help business. While each platform overlaps certain characteristics, they do each have unique purposes that differ one from the other.
One thing social media as a whole does not do is discriminate against age. In fact, all ages are seen using these platforms. Because social media is captivates all ages, it is interesting to know what age group connects with a certain platform the most. According to a Pew Research Study, demographics among social media users vary.
Facebook- 72 percent of adult Internet users
Facebook seems to be the platform that attracts adults. In fact, millennials seem to be “over” Facebook, as more and more parents become active users. From observations, Facebook is hands down the platform for the “older folk.” Users will see their grandparents on Facebook before they see them on Snapchat. (Hopefully!)
82 percent of online adults ages 18 to 29 use Facebook along with 79 percent of those ages 30 to 49, 64 percent of those ages 50 to 64 and 48 percent of those 65 and older.
Pinterest- 31 percent of adult Internet users
An interesting fact about Pinterest is that women are the dominant users. One may jump to conclusions as to why that makes sense, however Pinterest still brings in male users.
Nearly 44 percent of users are women, compared to only 16 percent of men. 37 percent of users 18-29 year-old use Pinterest, along with 36 percent for 30-49 year-olds, and 24 percent for 50- 64 year-olds. And finally, 16 percent of ages 65 and up use Pinterest.
Instagram- 28 percent of adult internet users
Instagram is a platform that is well diversified, and is becoming more and more versatile in its endeavors.
Again, this is a platform that is again dominated by women, but not by much. 31 percent of women use Instagram and 24 percent for men. 18-29 year-olds contain 55 percent, while 30-49 year-olds fall of 28 percent. 11 percent of users are aged 50-64.
Twitter- 23 percent of all Internet users/ 20 percent of the entire adult population
Different from the above platforms, MEN use Twitter more than women by 4 percent.
18-29 year olds contain 32 percent, while 30-49 year olds are down to 29 percent. As the ages get older, the percentage gets lower. 50-64 years old falls at 13 percent and 65 years old and up is a whopping 6 percent.
These statistics show that social media is not just a millennial thing. Adults are utilizing these platforms, especially as businesses adapt to this technological era movement. The breakdown of the numbers shows that all ages are conforming to social media, and it doesn’t show any stopping soon.
