What causes you to see colors? How can people see different color combinations of the same object? What constitutes color blindness?
If you were plugged into social media this Thursday afternoon, then perhaps you caught a glimpse of this body con lace dress that caused everyone to agree to disagree.
Dress Inception Stirs Internet
According to Business Insider, the origin of this image came from a 21 year old Scottish woman, Caitlin McNeill, who posted the dress on her Tumblr account and consulted the help of the Internet to come to a consensus. Some claimed to see a white dress with gold lace details, while others saw a blue dress with black lace. After a few famous celebrities, such as Taylor Swift, began to voice their opinions on social media outlets, others followed suit.
What’s the Science Behind the Dress?
After hours of arguments and mind tricks, science can explain the phenomenon of why people are seeing different colors. In a CNN article, Senior Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen explains that cones in our retinas detect red, blue and green in a photo, then mix to create colors. Simply put: we each view colors differently based upon our genes.
So what color is the real dress?
Blue and black– according to the retailer Roman Originals. For an image of a dress to go viral in a matter of hours, this good fortune truly allowed this particular retailer to benefit from the free publicity and public relations.
Well played Roman Originals. This dress will probably be one of your new best sellers.
