Look out LinkedIn, Facebook is Testing New Jobs Feature

If you’re looking for a job, clean up your Facebook page because that may be the first thing that potential employers see.

Facebook has confirmed that they are testing a new jobs feature on company Facebook pages. Companies now have a “jobs” option on the page when they post a status update where they can post open positions. The job opportunities will appear on a “Jobs” tab on the top of a company’s Facebook page.

Users can submit applications for job openings directly through Facebook. The applications will appear in a private message to the company’s page. Companies can also choose to pay extra to advertise the job openings on Facebook, much like LinkedIn’s ads.

What will happen to LinkedIn?

According to the Pew Research Center, 25 percent of all adults in the United States use LinkedIn, compared to a whopping 68 percent who use Facebook. Often, LinkedIn users who are employed only log in to update their skills or job description. Facebook appeals to both employed and unemployed users.

There’s no telling if the larger audience will be advantageous to job seekers or not. If companies use the new jobs feature on Facebook, there is a much bigger audience so there will likely be more applicants. To stand out to interviewers, applications will have to be more special.

On the other hand, people looking for jobs check LinkedIn first. It may take some time before Facebook’s new jobs becomes a popular place to look for jobs. If it becomes popular, LinkedIn may be abandoned and Facebook will become a one-stop shop.

Don’t delete your LinkedIn account just yet, but soon it may become obsolete if the new jobs feature takes off.
