Faster WiFi in Public Areas

Qualcomm is developing a new way to access WiFin in public areas.

One of my least favorite experiences is going to somewhere like Starbucks to sit leisurely and get work done only to fight with every other workaholic in the room for the stingy WiFi. One company is trying to fix this problem.

Chipmaker Qualcomm announced Thursday that it would back MU-MIMO (multi user-multiple-input multiple-output) in its task to diminish and hopefully eliminate overcrowded public WiFi signals. As they are set up now, public WiFi signals can easily get overcrowded with hundreds of users attempting to access the Internet. This leads to an extremely slow connection. In today’s world nothing can afford to be slow.

Faster WiFi is on the way.

Faster WiFi is on the way.

Better explained by PC World, wireless access points, “use short time slots to communicate with only one user at a time” but with this new MU-MIMO, access points will be able to communicate with many users simultaneously. This will lead to much faster Internet connection in public areas.

With MU-MIMO, developers are expecting speeds to increase by two to three times. In order for this to work in the future, both the access point and each device must support the new technology. Hello iPhone 6s? The Samsung Galaxy S5 already supports the software however a update is needed to activate MU-MIMO.

Any increase in speed for WiFi is a success for me. The world we live in today cannot survive on slow speed anything.
