Have you ever thought what would happen to all of your social media and digital accounts after you leave this earth? To many the thought about taking the measures to prepare for life after your gone can be morbid, but to some it may seem the only way. With everyone having a digital footprint today, it is necessary to think about your digital afterlife.
Today Google launched their new feature called Inactive Account Manager. This feature allows you to tell Google what to do when your Gmail messages and data from other Google accounts goes inactive for a certain allotted time. In the Inactive Account Manager, you are able to specify if you would want your accounts deleted or given to a selected trusted contact. You have the ability to choose from three, six, nine or 12 months before Google warns you through text message or alternative email address before taking action. It is important when completing your digital afterlife “will” to update your cell phone number and secondary email address.
Listed below are all the Google services included in your digital afterlife “will”:
- +1s
- Blogger
- Contacts and Circles
- Drive
- Gmail
- Google+ Profiles
- Pages and Streams
- Picasa Web Albums
- Google Voice
- YouTube
While Google is applauded for taking initiative in protecting our privacy and security, they do not inform us what will happen if we don’t create a digital afterlife “will”.
