It’s hard to imagine what life was like pre-COVID-19. It has been about a month of social distancing and isolation and the problems just seem to be getting worse, including job security during the quarantine.
Companies across the country are having to lay off employees and job security is in question. This is true in all industries. Unfortunately, public relations and communication professionals are in the high majority of people getting laid off. No matter how long a person has worked at a company their job is still at risk.
With the increasing number of deaths and hospitalizations of people with the coronavirus, the economic system is in disarray. Fortunately, there are federal laws in place that can protect you from losing your job during this crisis The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, protected leave for qualified medical reasons.
Although there are federal laws in place, job security during quartine is in uncharted waters. There are not any legal directives on how to navigate this pandemic long-term. There are many uncertainties during this time, but it is important to stay positive and to stay healthy. During this time it, especially if you have been laid off, is to use your social media and keep communicating.
