In the sport of boxing, Friday is the eve of fight night. What’s in store for this upcoming battle? One fighter will step down from his throne, the other will continue his reign. Undefeated fighters Canelo Alvarez and Austin Trout will be the main event, Saturday April 20 on Showtime. The fighters have agreed to bring this battle to the Lone Star State, where the show will take place in San Antonio’s Alamodome.
Canelo Alvarez is a twenty-two year-old, who is argued to still be too young to have reached his peak. Alvarez has taken a lot of heat for his opponent selection in the past. His fighters have been accused as “past their prime”, or just not fair contenders. To counter that argument, we must be reminded what happened to his last potential opponents. Canelo had agreed to fight Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto. Surprisingly to the boxing community, the favored fighters Ortiz and Cotto fell short and lost to the underdogs. Leaving Josesito Lopez, Canelo’s opponent mid 2012, to be his next fight. Which he dominated and defeated. Austin Trout has now made his way to the ring.
Austin Trout has followed his own path leading to the highly anticipated fight. He doesn’t belong to any major promoter. He has let his talent speak for itself. As mentioned, he beat future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto, to get to the Alamodome. He also fought Canelo Alvarez’s brother, Rigoberto Alvarez, in 2011. Leaving the ring as victor, he won the WBA light middleweight belt.
What is the real difference between these fighters? It is becoming more and more hard to tell? They are both elite fighters, both undefeated, both hungry, both looking to stay on their throne. Who will own both the WBC & WBA Junior Welterweight title? If you want to know, tune into Showtime 10p.m. April 20th to find out.
