Last week Instagram announced that it would be rolling ads in the upcoming months. This isn’t the first time they have tried to make money off of their app. After an attempt to charge their users in the past, will this effort be successful?
Reportedly after Facebook’s inquisition of Instagram the app failed to render profit and there was an attempt to allow companies to pull user pictures and use them in advertising.
There was a tremendous backlash for this movement and instagram reneged its attempt to make money off of its users. Privacy invasion is something companies must learn to manage in the digital world.
This is not the first time social media users have had issues with advertising and privacy. Remember when Facebook first started using ads on their page, they slowly crept up on the side of our profiles and now show up in our feeds. Remember the spam posts about privacy scares when people thought their private messages were accessible to the entire public?
In order for social media to work well, companies have to manage lowest cost to users, balancing stakeholder happiness, and generating profit. We have seen Insta-users fight back against unwanted changes before and who knows what they will do this time.
Sound off in the comments! How do you feel about the upcoming Insta-changes? Will Ista-users revolt against these measures?
