Cyberbullying and Adolescent Suicide

In September 2012, 15 yr old Audrie Pott committed suicide after falling victim to cyber bullying. Photos circulated of Pott’s alleged sexual assault and ‘ruined her life.’ On April 11, 2013, three teenage boys from her high school were arrested on counts of sexual assault against Pott. After her memorial service, Pott’s parents looked at her Facebook account and other social media and recognized posts during the last week of her life that directly correlate to the alleged assault.

Historically, people have learned of most terror events by watching the news on television or receiving a phone call from a loved on to turn on the television and watch the news. But on April 15, 2013, it was the Twitter-verse that got the news out first.

Earlier today the former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, died of a stroke at the age of 87. Reactions on Twitter have shown the hashtag #IronLady and #nowthatchersdead are both being used for sharing thoughts about Thatcher’s death. But #nowthatchersdead is causing more of a problem.

What Does The New Twitter Patent Mean??

After nearly 5 years of waiting, Twitter has been granted a patent by The U.S. Patents and Trademark Office, describing the patent as a “device independent message distribution platform.” The Twitter patent could even allow Twitter to sue companies like Facebook for using ‘follow.’ Read more to know what else this new Twitter patent could cause.
